Ward Clinic & Meeting: Ultimately a Time-Saver
By Pat Connor, CJF

With sincere wonder I rack my brain to try to find out why more members were not there. It doesn’t look like it matters whether the VHA charges or not because this clinic was free as was lunch! Danny Ward came up and was more than happy to share a few helpful modification and worldly thoughts. For those of you who don’t know, Danny is a past member of the Farrier’s Team. Others and myself have spent thousands of dollars and many hours going to clinics to get help from people just like Danny. So, next time you see Danny be sure to thank him for the time and many tips he donated to the members of the VHA. Never once has he held out his hand for himself.

Thanks Danny!

Now back to bitching...The VHA is at it’s all time high both financially and in membership, but attendance at clinics is still poor. Just in my area alone there are about 10 new farriers, one to three years out of school. Did these guys go to such a good school that they don’t need to learn anymore? Or, is the economy so good that everyone can just bluff their way through?

I blame a “lack of pride” for a lot of it, it’s easy to buy pre-clipped shoes and pre-made bar shoes, it doesn’t matter if the clips are where you need them or the bar shoes don’t fit. I know you’re going to put the shoe on too small, so grab the next size up - “he needs the extra support”. RIGHT? NOT ALWAYS!!

Next summer when your horses are sore and losing a lot of shoes, remember: you missed a good clinic. So, when you’re running around replacing shoes and trying to help those poor horses, a few friends and I will be fishing!! Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. If you want to plan or suggest a clinic or other event, please contact any member of the Board.

So What’s the Big Deal with the Board?

The VHA Board of Directors is a group of members who donate their time and talent to keep the VHA a growing and worthwhile association. The Board plans clinics, projects, and contests and it maintain our voluntary Accident/Illness program which has been a big help to many of us. The Board is responsible for launching this newsletter to reach out to and connect our growing membership. You might want to contact a board member to discover details of an upcoming clinic or you might want to find out what is involved in Board membership. In any case, the Board of the VHA is your board-hard working, interested in listening, and ready to discuss any ideas you might have for the VHA. Why not call a Board member today and suggest a needed clinic? They’d love to hear from you.
